The Great American Pension Heist
How a multi-trillion dollar crime was committed in plain sight while the victims thanked the thieves
“To millions of American workers who were promised security in their golden years, only to find themselves ensnared in a labyrinth of market volatility... and a retirement system designed not for their benefit, but for the enrichment of those who whispered sweetly of 'personal responsibility' whilst picking their pockets.”
This one started as a serious question and turned into something I had more fun writing than I expected: what actually happened to the American pension, and why did the people it was taken from thank the people who took it? The short answer is that it's one of the cleanest cons in economic history — and like all the best cons, it worked because the victims participated willingly, believing the whole way through that it was for their own good.
I wrote it as an investigation, narrated in the borrowed voice of a certain famous Belgian detective, because that's genuinely the right lens for it: this wasn't an accident of policy. It was a pattern, and patterns are what detectives are for.
